Overdose Awareness Month 2025: Stories, Support, and Solutions for South Jersey

Every August, communities around the world come together to observe Overdose Awareness Month. Here in Cherry Hill, and across the South Jersey region, this month carries a particular weight. It’s a time for remembrance, for honoring the lives tragically lost, and for breaking the silence and stigma that too often surround addiction. In the face of a persistent opioid and polysubstance crisis, this month serves as a crucial reminder that awareness is the first step, but action is what brings about real change.

At Harmony Healing Center, we believe that the conversation about overdose prevention is a vital one for our community. We stand at the front lines, and we know that understanding the local crisis is key to providing effective, compassionate care that truly saves lives. This month, we invite you to join us in turning awareness into action.

Understanding the Overdose Crisis in New Jersey

The overdose crisis in New Jersey is not a static problem. It is a dynamic, evolving challenge, and staying informed about its local impact is vital for prevention and treatment.

Local Statistics for Camden County and South Jersey

The data paints a clear and sobering picture of the challenges we face in our backyard. While New Jersey has seen a hopeful drop in overdose deaths in recent years, certain regions remain hotspots.

For example, Camden County, where Cherry Hill is located, had an overdose death rate of 53.7 per 100,000 in 2023—one of the highest in the state. This reflects the intense pressure the crisis has placed on the greater Philadelphia/South Jersey area. The human cost of these numbers is immeasurable, and it underscores the urgent need for accessible, local solutions.

Common Substances Involved

The overdose crisis has become more complex than ever before, with a dangerous combination of substances driving fatalities. Fentanyl remains the dominant force; statewide, about 82% of New Jersey’s overdose deaths in 2023 involved synthetic opioids like fentanyl. However, fentanyl is rarely found alone. It is increasingly mixed with other dangerous drugs, creating a deadly polysubstance threat. For example, the animal tranquilizer xylazine, often called “tranq,” has emerged as a particularly troubling adulterant in the South Jersey area. Because it is not an opioid, it complicates overdose reversals and can cause severe physical harm.

Other drugs like cocaine are also frequent contributors, often found in combination with fentanyl, leading to unexpected and fatal overdoses.

The Power of Awareness

In the face of these challenges, awareness is a powerful tool for change.

  • Reducing stigma around addiction and recovery: By speaking openly about substance use disorders as a treatable health condition, we can reduce the shame that often prevents people from seeking help.
  • Encouraging open conversations within families and communities: A willingness to talk honestly about addiction, overdose, and mental health can create a supportive environment where individuals feel safe to ask for help before it’s too late.

Local Events and Initiatives

Community / 12-Step Meetings

Throughout Overdose Awareness Month, there are numerous opportunities in and around Cherry Hill to get involved and show your support. Be on the lookout for local events, such as overdose awareness vigils, walks, and community workshops. These events provide a space for remembrance, education, and connection.

The state also offers a number of resources that are vital for prevention and support, including a statewide naloxone distribution program and community-based task forces.

At Harmony Healing Center, we are a committed part of the solution to the overdose crisis in South Jersey. Our programs are designed to provide the life-saving, comprehensive care that the community needs.

  • Medical detox and residential care: We provide a safe, medically supervised environment for withdrawal from substances, serving as the crucial first step to recovery.
  • Dual diagnosis treatment: We specialize in integrated care for co-occurring mental health and substance use issues, recognizing that addiction is often a coping mechanism for underlying conditions like depression, anxiety, or trauma.
  • Family education and involvement: We understand that addiction impacts the entire family. Our family programs help loved ones heal, learn new communication skills, and become a positive part of the recovery process.
